When Jonathan Fishman, a young Manhattan computer specialist randomly encounters a prostitute he is shocked to recognize her as Roberta whom he knew when they were both children. To the dismay of his friends, his business partner and his new girlfriend Judy, Jonathan decides to help Roberta off the streets by moving her into his apartment and teaching her the skills necessary to find an office job. What begins as a seemingly altruistic gesture reveals itself as an unwavering obsession, and his life slowly unravels.

We follow Roberta's transition from youth to adulthood. It is an intimate portrait of a person who is floating in time and space, without finding purpose in life. She doesn't want to be bothered by society, but cannot deny that she's dependent on it.

According to Roberta, she doesn’t want much from life – to live quietly and be a good person, but also, very importantly, not to be bored. She doesn’t have ambition to be the best, she’s not seeking education, a better job or a more comfortable home. She exemplifies perfectly the spirit of the time – of economic and spiritual instability, uncertainty and constant change. The film tells the story in two strands. One is a chronological retelling of Roberta’s life events: one day she is a punk girl in one of Vilnius’ night clubs, the next,a responsible nanny in Reykjavik. The second strand consists of Roberta’s mesmerising and often co- mical monologues that bring us closer to her world and allow us to see things through her eyes.
